General
Visit the Marta Abreu Central University of Las Villas, Che’s first headquarters and his base for liberating the city of Santa Clara. Go by the old Public Works building—the Rebel Army’s second command post during the Revolutionary War and now the provincial headquarters of the Communist Party of Cuba. Time for taking photos at The Children’s Che, a sculptural work inspired by that outstanding man.
Visit the armoured train monument; Carmen Park, where the city was founded on July 15, 1689; and the monument to El Vaquerito (the “Little Cowboy,” head of the Rebel Army’s suicide platoon, who lost his life in December 1958, during the final days of the fighting). Tour the oldest part of the city, including Leoncio Vidal Park; La Caridad Theatre; and the old Palace of Government (now the provincial library), which has been declared a national monument—all scenes of important battles during the liberation of the city.
Visit the Ernesto Guevara Memorial, which contains the remains of Che and his comrades in the guerrilla war in Bolivia.
Have lunch in the La Arboleda Restaurant at Villa La Granjita.
